Other Good Stuff
When traveling to a new place I love coming across beautiful and surprising street art. Good artists see an opportunity to create something in a specific space that I would never have thought of, making people stop and take notice instead of simply continuing throughout their day on auto pilot.
In Penang, Malaysia I noticed a series of iron caricature sculptures throughout town showing everyday life and historical facts about the city, as well as several charming works from Lithuanian artist, Ernest Zacharevic. Finding installations of these two series made a game of walking around and exploring the city – you never knew when you’d turn a corner and be rewarded with a piece you hadn’t seen before.
In Florence, French artist, Clet Abraham, has been creating his own sort of treasure hunt transforming street signs for the past several years with some simple adhesives.
While many of the clever decals are applied to no entry signs, it doesn’t mean other traffic signs are safe from being hacked.
My favorites are still the adjustments to the red and white no entry signs however. It’s incredible how just a slight change of color and lines can create an entirely different scene in the same shape and space.
