Other Good Stuff
I don’t miss the build up to Christmas. The constant barrage of commercials, sales, decorations and expectations does not exist in Thailand…and it’s quite nice. I love holidays and gifts and happily jump on any excuse for a celebration, but for the people, experiences and memories, not stuff.
Instead of participating in Cyber Monday or the onslaught of gift buying leading up to Christmas, I’ve partnered with Yogamour Global, a non profit organization (you might remember this post) that is participating in this year’s #GivingTuesday to raise money for a new project. Yogamour encourages people to take their yoga off their mat and into the real world in the form of seva, which means ‘selfless service’ in Sanskrit. To do this, Yogamour organizes volunteer yoga retreats in India, Thailand and Myanmar where volunteers can attend a special retreat and further their yoga practice while giving back to the rural and marginalized communities in those countries that Yogamour supports with health clinics, donations and education.
The concept behind #Giving Tuesday is simple – celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving (in the U.S.), Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday is a global movement that starts the charitable season, focusing on giving back rather than consuming.
At Yogamour, we’re using the day to kick off fundraising efforts for the organization’s new Seva Backpack Project.
It is our goal to provide every child in the communities we support with proper hygiene supplies for one whole year. This includes uniforms, underwear, socks, toothpaste, toothbrushes, all items for bathing, water purifiers and much more all packed into a durable backpack that can be used for school. We have worked with health experts and doctors to create these comprehensive bags which are gender specific and age appropriate.
Every person deserves accurate information on maintaining their health and the basic supplies that are required to keep them clean, healthy and attending school. With your help, we can provide comprehensive Seva Backpacks for more than 300 children.
There are several simple ways you can help and show your support:
You can donate online at http://www.yogamourglobal.org/donate-seva-backpacks/
Each backpack kit will include the following items for one year’s worth of use:
Total, we’re trying to raise a total of $55,000 between now and Christmas Eve to be able to produce and hand out the backpacks in early 2017. #GivingTuesday is the launch, but we’ll be fundraising throughout the month of December, so please help to share the story and keep the charitable vibes going!
